Subrata Roy, the visionary founder of the Sahara Group, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 75 after battling a prolonged illness. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on Sunday due to deteriorating health.
In a statement, Sahara India Pariwar expressed deep sorrow, announcing the demise of their respected leader, ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara. Describing him as an inspirational leader, he succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest on November 14, 2023, at 10:30 pm, following an extended struggle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.
Born on June 10, 1948, in Bihar’s Araria, Subrata Roy built an extensive empire spanning finance, real estate, media, and hospitality. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur and initiated his business journey in Gorakhpur before assuming control of Sahara Finance in 1976. In 1978, he metamorphosed it into Sahara India Pariwar, blossoming into one of the most extensive conglomerates in India. The Sahara group ventured into media with the launch of Rashtriya Sahara, a Hindi language newspaper, in 1992, and later entered the television space with Sahara TV, subsequently renamed Sahara One.
